Nothing Should Scare You! Not Even Science or Mathematics - Regina Honu

Almost every woman in STEM agrees that science is not as difficult as many people think. It is true that some aspects of science can appear abstract and that mathematics can be a little challenging sometimes. Amazing women like Regina Honu have proved that science, technology, engineering and mathematics are doable.

Regina is the CEO and founder of Soronko Solutions. Regina also runs Soronko Academy, a coding and human-centered design academy for children and adults. She was featured on CNN as one of the  twelve inspirational women who rock STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and as one of the six women making an impact in the African technology space. Her success story has been featured on international media platforms like BBC and Aljazeera as well as the “Impatient Optimist” blog by Bill and Melinda Gates. Her story was also captured in Facebook COO, Sheryl Sandberg’s book, Lean In.

Just like everyone else, Regina had her own fears and faced failure a number of times. For instance, she had almost dropped computer science as a major in her first year at the university. She had  failed her coding class and was struggling through her introductory visual basics class. Everything around her showed she was not cut out for science. Nevertheless, she persisted.

Regina abandoned her intention of switching from computer science to a program she felt would be easier and chose to persist. She saw the situation as a challenge and tackled it as such. With persistence, determination and hard work, she graduated top of her class and rose to become a software developer and tech enthusiast that the world reckons with.

Just like Regina, you too can choose to rise above your fear of science and mathematics and do many amazing things. Remember, you can do anything you set your mind to. You are that strong.
